Moon Gate Villa

The Villa

Passing through a 2.5 metre-wide solid wood door, guests are greeted by a waterfall tumbling into the stream that flows the length of the atrium entrance. Moon Gate Villa was designed by a European architect for successful Mills & Boon romance novelist, Robyn Donald.
Cupid’s bow forms the shape of the house, and the arrow inspired terrace pergola points towards the heart of the Moon Gate sculpture over the sub-tropical garden ponds.

The Host

Hosting a maximum of 7 guests in three suites; Moon Gate offers a chance to experience genuine Maori hospitality.  Learn a few Maori words!  Discover the importance of Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands to New Zealand's history and culture.  Moon Gate Villa’s host Lionel is New Zealand Maori. His great, great, great grandfather Te Potae Aute, was an original signatory to the Waitangi treaty; signed on behalf of the people of Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast, and viewable through the interactive display a short distance away at the Waitangi museum Te Kōngahu.

The Villa has on display a number of Maori carvings and your hosts whanau taonga.  As well as beautifully presented traditional breakfasts, guests are likely to be offered kiwi savoury mince and Maori fried bread!

The Gardens

The 1.5 acre formal gardens were designed to complement the graceful shape of the main villa, and have featured in architectural magazines and garden shows.  The lush lawns divide gardens beds into distinct rooms, each with their own theme: tropical, native New Zealand, bromeliad and European. The Deluxe suite even has a secret garden leading from the terrace.
