This comfortable lodge is situated among agricultural rural plots adjacent to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Its location is ideal – 3km from the headquarters of the park from where visitors set out on foot to track the magnificent mountain gorillas or the charming golden monkeys. Other optional activities include escorted community walks, cultural encounters, scenic drives, bird watching and hiking. The main public areas at Sabyinyo Silverback lodge comprise a reception area, lounge, dining room, library / games room, a responsible tourism / community awareness room and a small boutique. Large fireplaces provide warmth and all rooms are finished with a polished wooden floor. Two patio areas afford wonderful and dramatic views to the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding lowland farmland. Accommodation comprises six double cottages, two superior cottages called 'suites' and one family cottage. The family cottage comprises two bedrooms each with its own bathroom en suite, connected by a shared veranda. The two superior ‘suite’ cottages are more spacious than the standard cottages and are more secluded. All cottages are individual stone buildings with Rwandese terracotta tile roofs, set apart in the expansive gardens for maximum privacy. Each features a bedroom with sitting area, fireplace, dressing room and a sheltered veranda. Heat exchangers in the in-room fireplaces provide a supply of hot water to the en suite bathrooms, stylishly finished with Venetian plaster. The lodge aims to have as small a carbon footprint as possible. Generators only run for an average of 6 hours per day but powerful batteries provide lighting and power to guest rooms 24 hours a day. However, these batteries may not run high power appliances such as hair dryers and computers and these should only be used whilst generators are running. Cell phone coverage is limited.
