Introduction

Amazing Sabah

With an area the size of Tasmania, Sabah was administered by the British North Borneo Company until World War II. The state was incorporated into the new nation of Malaysia in 1963. The country has a diverse population and comprises many ethnic groups. Since independence the state has prospered due to the large-scale production of palm oil, and South East Asia's highest mountain, Mt Kinabalu, is within its borders. The national icon is the endangered Orangutan.

Unique Sarawak

Sarawak is the largest and least developed of the various Malaysian states and has traditionally been associated with blow pipes and head hunters. Modern history begins when James Brooke arrived in Sarawak in 1839 to assist the local viceroy who was at war with a neighbouring state. As a result of this he became the local Raja and the founder of a dynasty named the White Rajas of Sarawak. The last Raja resigned in 1951 and the state was subsequently incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia.
