Introduction

African Sojourns and Wildfly Travel are thrilled to offer this Fishing sojourn taking in the Maletsunyane River, Lesotho and the Lower Zambezi, Zambia. The Kingdom of Lesotho is made up mostly of highlands where many of the villages can still only be reached on horseback, by foot or light aircraft. This sojourn is a fabulous opportunity to visit some of the remotest parts of Southern Africa and enjoy fishing in two spectacular locations. September is the start of the fishing season in Lesotho so the ideal time to travel.

The Maletsunyane River in Lesotho on whose banks Semonkong lodge lies, presents some unique fishing opportunities. The river was stocked with Trout in the mid 1950’s, the area above the falls with both Browns & Rainbows, but as so often happens one species prevailed above the falls and today this stretch is exclusively Browns only. They obviously found the river to their liking and with the ample water flow, abundant food supply and minimal fishing pressure have developed into a population of fish that rivals those in the best trophy rivers in famous destinations such as New Zealand, Patagonia, Alaska and around the globe. Downstream, the stretch of river between the falls and the confluence with the Mighty Senqu are where the Browns are still found, but they share the river with Rainbow Trout and Yellowfish, with the challenge of achieving a ‘grand slam’ by catching all three of these species in trophy proportions.

On the lower Zambezi in Zambia try your luck with the famous African Tiger Fish (Hydrocynus Vittatus) which offers, pound for pound, some of the best sport angling anywhere in the world. Whilst maintaining a strict catch and release policy, our enthusiastic guides will introduce you to this fierce freshwater predator, on a fly rod or with a lure. Other species to be caught are Barble, Bream, Chessa, Cornish Jack, Nkupe and Vundu. You will have the opportunity to view game in the area including sightings of elephant, lion, leopard and zebra, as well as wild dog. Each of these areas can be booked as a short breakaway.
