The diverse habitats of this route are home to up to 620 bird species (in the whole of southern Africa there are about 955 species), making this trip a true magnet for birdwatchers. The wetlands are among the top destinations for bird watching in Africa. Due to the dry areas, for example Sossusvlei or Makgadikgadi salt pans, this trip also offers various desert specialists.
The Etosha National Park in Namibia has a wonderful array of animals—lion, zebra, springbok, and kudu, among many others. Elephants are common, visits from black rhinos and cheetahs still occur, and the birdlife includes such species as Bare-cheeked Babbler, Violet Wood Hoopoe, Lanner Falcon, and Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Blue Crane, Secretarybird, plus many endemics.
