Day 1: Vancouver

Sun. 3 Mar 2024

Depart Toronto for your flight to Vancouver with Westjet departing at 12:00pm, arriving at 2:11pm.

Upon arrival, transfer to Camp Alexandra. You will gather to talk about the trip itinerary and get excited for the adventures ahead.

Enjoy a walk as a group before having dinner.

Overnight at Camp Alexandra.

Day 2: Vancouver

Mon. 4 Mar 2024

Wake up:

OPTION 1: DUKE OF ED PREP all day.

Day 3: British Columbia

Tue. 5 Mar 2024

Breakfast at camp.

After breakfast, shuttle to Horseshoe Bay 9:45am ferry and transfer to Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.  Approximate arrival is 11:00am.

Lunch will be at the park underneath the gazebo.

This afternoon, take part your first wilderness workshop where you will trip plan,  perfect your paddle strokes, review BC weather, learn how to set up and ‘winterize’ tents, preparing for our first (Duke of Ed) overnight & cooking experience.

Take some time to explore, relax and settle in and even tour the incredible oceanfront trails, forested spaces and coastal inlet views surrounding our camp.

Dinner tonight will be a ‘campfire cookout’.

Duke of Ed students will prepare or help prepare dinners in order to satisfy the Adventurous Journey requirement of preparing one substantial meal per day. Each meal will be cooked under the supervision of our professional wilderness cooking staff using fresh ingredients.

Evening hike to the estuary.

Day 4: Vancouver

Wed. 6 Mar 2024

Warm up and enjoy breakfast by the fire (prepared by students supported by staff for Duke of Ed.).

We are off on our Award Journey! 

Each day the group will paddle to a different locations along a junior Fjord, explore the shorelines, learn the history and geography of the area while also practicing and improving our ocean paddle strokes.  Each night we will stay in a different location within the inlet.  Each site is along the ocean and all campsites are near the shore.  The canoes & kayaks will always paddle close to the shore. 

Along this journey the group will experience various wilderness workshops like:  "Oceans to Shorelines".  Hike and learn about hiking risk management, shelter building, principles of leave no trace and creating fire bags.

Dinner as a group while you debrief the day and take part in a youth reading of "The Giving Tree".

After dinner, we will finish our day with a delicious snack and a campfire.

Day 5: Vancouver

Thu. 7 Mar 2024

Wake up with the sun and take part in a sunrise ceremony.

Enjoy a big breakfast!

Today's paddle will average 4-6 hours with stops to soak in the beautiful views.  There will be islands full of seals, large trees and Oyster Farms along the way.  The significance of this area will be discussed with the group on how BC is striving to protect this unique water system.  

After a day filled with adventure, arrive back to hot chilli, brownies, hot chocolate. The evening will be dedicated to debriefing their experience and understanding the meaning what we experienced today.

Day 6: Vancouver

Fri. 8 Mar 2024

Wake up to another activity (Self reflection of a polar bear dip).

Following your morning activity, enjoy breakfast by the fire.

After breakfast, Complete your Gold Journey with a return to Porpoise Bay.  Well done!

Approximate arrival will be after lunch.  We will clean up our gear, take showers and celebrate your achievement with a Chinese Food Buffet!

Day 7: Vancouver

Sat. 9 Mar 2024

Breakfast.

Travel north and Hike one hour to marvel at one of the great wonders of BC's sunshine Coast - The Skookumchuck Narrows.  Students will have the opportunity to see unique rapids flowing  speeds of 30km/h as about 200 billion gallons of water passes through the narrows during a tide change. Possibility of watching surfers riding standing waves. 

Ferry back.

Time to explore Vancouver before returning to camp Alex for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: End of Itinerary

Sun. 10 Mar 2024

Wake up and have an early breakfast.

Pack up early and head to the airport for your flight home with WestJet, departing at 11:00am, arriving in Toronto at 6:30pm. Participants will purchase meals (at own expense) in transit today.
