After lunch settle into the safari lodge before heading into the bush for an afternoon game drive. At sunset the game drive slows to a halt in the perfect location to enjoy a cold drink as the day draws to a close. After dark you'll head back out for a night game drive - this involves a spotter with a powerful night light which sweeps the ground and the trees in search of the reflective glow of eyes in the darkness - a great experience!

Expert tips

Tarangire is a particularly good area for walking safaris. Environmentally it's a combination of open plain and riparian forest, it has a source of permanent water (the Tarangire river) which accounts for the concentration of game during the dry months.

Oliver’s Camp is located in what is no doubt the most spectacular location in the park close to the animal dense Silale Swamps. Overlooking a flood plain of the Minyonyo Pools, part of the Tarangire River, the camp has a spectacular view and easy access to a dense concentration of wildlife.

One of the smaller parks in Tanzania, Lake Manyara offers a microcosm of the safari experience to be found in Tanzania. The diverse landscape includes lush ground water forest hosting baboons, monkeys and canopy dwelling birdlife. Grassy floodplains are home to larger mammals like buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe. Inland you may see the famous tree climbing lions and herds of elephant. Day 5: Karatu

Make an early start to the day in order to avoid the later influx of tourists into the Ngorongoro Crater. The park gate opens at 0600, so it is best to be there as close to this time as possible.

Enjoy a packed lunch under the trees on the crater floor - a word of warning - keep an eye out for the monkey’s who are always keen to take advantage of an opportunistic moment and relieve you of your lunch! In the afternoon you'll drive up and out of the crater back towards Karatu.

Spend the afternoon in the pool, schedule a massage or catch up on some reading under the trees.

Expert tips

The Ngorongoro Crater is a large, unbroken, un-flooded caldera, formed when a giant volcano erupted and collapsed some three million years ago. Had it not become a caldera, it is possible that the volcanic mountain would be about the same height as Kilimanjaro. Down on the crater floor there is an abundance of wildlife including black rhino, wildebeest, zebra and eland. There are a number of lion which are typically larger in size than an average lion due the large amount of game in the area. The crater floor tends to get very busy, with there often being numerous vehicles at any wildlife sighting.
