Days 1 - 3: Laikipia

Assuming you arrive at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in the morning, you will be met and transferred to Olepangi by your private driver/ guide and his safari equipped 4x4 Land Cruiser. Driving north for approximately four hours through the fertile lands and coffee plantations of the Kikuyu tribe, passed the Aberdare Mountain range and around the foothills of Mt Kenya into the Laikipia region, you will arrive at Olepangi Farmhouse in time for lunch. The town of Nanyuki has some supermarkets and curio shops that might be of interest on the way.

Olepangi is a family home with five charming cottages perched on their northern boundary, looking over the stunning 36,000-acre Ole Naishu Ranch, a working cattle ranch full of wildlife. This ranch connects with millions of acres of bushland including Lolldaiga Hills, Borana, Ol Jogi and Mpala Ranch.

As you sip a morning coffee or evening sundowner, the wildlife often wander over the hills just across the valley: the property is protected by a low-lying elephant fence which allows herds of zebra and impala, eland and kongoni, elephant and giraffe to wander around… Night falls to the sound of hyena hunting and periodically lion or leopard are around as well!

Days 4 - 5: Masai Mara

After an early breakfast your driver/guide will drop you at Nanyuki Airstrip to catch a scheduled flight to the Masai Mara. On arrival at Ol Kiombo airstrip a representative from Speke's Camp will be waiting to transfer you back to camp where you will arrive just in time for lunch.

Your days on safari can be spent as you wish and your driver/guide will discuss each day with you as you go along. The norm is an early wake up with coffee/tea around 6am to depart on a pre-breakfast game drive at about 630am. Being so close to the equator sunrise and sunset varies by an hour at most throughout the year, the temperature can also be comparatively cold in the early mornings and evenings, so it is a good idea to dress in layers when you go out on a drive as the middle of the day will be hot and dry.

After a sumptuous breakfast, the middle of the day is yours to do with as you please, many people go back to their tents and have a shower, perhaps read and take a nap before lunch or play board games in the main mess/lounge area of camp. After lunch you have a few hours to relax again before heading out around 330/4pm on an afternoon game drive – perhaps follow up on the pride of lion you saw in the morning, or head out to look for an elusive leopard or cheetah. After the game drive is time for a well-deserved pre-dinner drink around the camp fire and a chance to swap stories with other guests.
