The Outpost | Northern Kruger Park - Makuleke
The Outpost lies in a vast wilderness area in the northernmost part of Kruger National Park. This region, called the Makuleke Region, is bordered to the north by the Limpopo River and Zimbabwe and to the east by Crooks Corner and Mozambique. The Outpost comprises one large main building and twelve stand-alone living spaces set against the side of a hill overlooking the Luvuvhu River.
The spacious, standalone units are stilted, jutting out from the teak walkway. Floors are concrete, sealed with beeswax polish. Each room features a stone bathtub and shower (both outdoors when the floor-to-ceiling blinds are up), a large comfy bed with mosquito net drapes, and two daybeds – one in the room, the other on the wraparound balcony. A slide-away shelving and luggage rack keeps the space looking tidy. The contemporary design of each space makes use of concrete and steel with retractable remote controlled screens. The living area of each Space comprises an outdoor terrace with daybed, indoor lounge and bedroom with king size bed under mosquito netting.
Brunch is usually served after the morning game drive at around 10.30am. Alongside the popular Pafuri eggs Benedict (on ciabatta with hickory-smoked ham and sautéed mushrooms) and other breakfast staples, there are lunch options such as butter-fried beef fillet. Dinner is a three-course à la carte affair, which could feature butternut squash risotto, tender kudu fillets and an apple tart!
Service is wonderful, warm and friendly, and guiding is excellent. It makes all the difference having a great guide when game is spread over a vast area – they need to bring the smaller details to life, and head guide Nick Smith does exactly that. There’s a pool on the main deck, other than that, the focus is on simply soaking up the scenery and relaxing, perhaps with an in-room spa treatment.
Guests are offered a choice of a long or short game excursion in the morning and again in the late afternoon which may extend into the early evening. Game drives are conducted by qualified and experienced guides in open-air four wheel-drive vehicles.
Conservation Safari Company recommends The Outpost for its stunning location and views, and the opportunity to explore the very northern reaches of the Kruger National Park. Fantastic landscapes, majestic Baobab trees and reasonable game viewing make this a great lodge to combine with the Timbavati or Sabi Sands reserves or a relaxing escape.
Rates include two game drives per day in open safari vehicles with sun-downers and snacks. Optional game walks. Three meals daily. Tea & Coffee. All beverages excluding premium wines and spirits from their wine cellar. Laundry Service. Wi-Fi in central area.
