World Wildlife Day Special - North and South Luangwa

The South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa.

It is through this that the great meandering Luangwa river runs, with its ox bow lagoons, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds.

Luangwa River Camp sits nestled under an ancient ebony grove on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the game rich area known as the Luangwa Wafwa.

This small and intimate camp with just five bush suites, along with its setting and location creates a real “wow” factor and a romantic feeling simply flows through the camp.

The subtly decorated bush suites with brick walls and thatch roof each have ensuite bathrooms with sunken bathtubs looking out onto your own private corner of Africa. Both the bedroom and bathroom are afronted with large sliding doors leading onto a decked area allowing a lovely breeze into the room and great views onto the river.

It is through this 9050sq kilometer National Park that the great meandering Luangwa River runs, with its ox bow lagoons, tributaries, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds.

Situated in the exclusive Nsefu Sector Tena Tena sits nestled under a magnificent and thick grove of mahogany trees. On a double tiered river bank each room enjoys its own private view onto a long stretch of the Luangwa River.

Tena Tena is synonymous with Robin Pope Safaris as it was the first camp which Robin opened and ran and has become a favourite amongst many safari lovers over the years.

The six tents are very private with plenty of space between them and each with its own window onto a magnificent stretch of the Luangwa River where the hippos wallow and the lions roam. The en-suite bathrooms are spacious and open to the elements, designed to copy nature with curved walls around the trees and simple subtle colours and a view from every facility. Each tent is specifically located to maximize privacy both in the rooms, bathrooms and on the verandahs with comfortable sitting areas and excellent views onto the river.

Walking safaris Sleep outs

On foot guests are given the rare opportunity to become part of nature, to immerse themselves in the wonders that present themselves at every turn. A walking safari is always led by an experienced guide with an armed National Park scout and a tea bearer so their are many eyes ready to spot the Luangwa's wildlife, identify the smallest insect, track last night's lion spoor and identify a possible threat before it really becomes one.

Children under the age of 12 are unfortunately not able to take part in walking safaris at Remote Africa Safaris.

Sleep outs are for the more adventurous looking to become in tune with the wilderness of the Luangwa.

After a buffet lunch and siesta in the camp, guests shower and prepare for their night out in the bush. Tea and cake is enjoyed in camp and then the group sets off on a short afternoon activity, at the end of which they arrive at the sleep-out location. This is usually on a wide open beach on the banks of the Mwaleshi river.

Feast on a delicious dinner cooked over the flames of a raw wood fire out on a remote bend of the Mwaleshi river. Sip on a night cap around the fire before retiring to bed – a camper mattress on the ground tucked under a net leaving unobstructed views of the night’s sky.

The safety of having an experienced guide and armed scout nearby ensures a sweet nights sleep while listening to the natural calls of the bush.

The next morning, a light breakfast is enjoyed at dawn and then the group sets off for a morning walking activity back to camp.

Sleep outs must be pre-booked as they are a ‘whole camp’ activity. They may be done at no additional cost.
