Shu'Mata Camp

Shu’mata Camp is located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, deep in Maasai land, South Amboseli.

Comprises six large East African safari tents, in true Hemingway style, are in line on a hill offering   magnificent views lead in all directions. At the front of the camp, bush savannah melts into the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, towering above into the normal blue skies of Africa. You are so close that, on a moonlit night, details of the glaciers can be visible

Seasonally, the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife - large herds of elephant, eland, zebra and wildebeest and oryx,  as well as Grants and Thompson gazelle. Lion and cheetah may rub their paws! This barren land scattered with `islands´ of old acacia forest and seasonal swamps, flanks the pans of the `embosel´ ecosystem which stretches to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is in this region, away from the busy tourism areas of northern Tanzania, where the elder elephants retreat to live out their final years in peace and harmony, away from the madding crowds.

The Camp offers a special Maasai experience where you can meet with the Maasai, understand their culture, their medicines, their rituals etc and even go tracking animals with them.

West Kilimanjaro is a private concession of more than 75.000 acres, bordering Kenya's Amboseli National Park. It offers spectacular landscapes, excellent game viewing and close interaction with the local Maasai tribesmen.

Mixed woodlands and grassland and rocky peaks dominate the area. The area’s wildlife and bird life are representative of the Somali Maasai biome and offer a unique chance to see the gerenuk antelope, yellow baboon and lesser kudu. At night sightings of the striped hyena is a real possibility.

It is the home to a population of huge elephant males carrying some of the largest tusks left in Africa; these are peaceful animals which are a real treat to observe.
