Mokoro safaris

Mokoro is the name given to the traditional dug-out wooden canoe. All over Botswana, mekoros are known as the most intimate method by which to explore the Okavango Delta. Silently gliding through the narrow channels and shallower waters powered by the standing oarsmen.

This is an opportunity to delve deeper into the Okavango Delta and to get closer to the details of nature that create the bigger picture. Bird watching and game viewing from a mokoro is one of the best experiences in Botswana.

Xaxaba Village Tours

Afrika Ecco's private campsite in the Okavango Delta is on the island of Xaxaba. Local guides reside there, and owner of Afrika Ecco grew up there. Guests are offered the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the village, which is a self-sufficient fishing and veggie-farming community of people, who live sustainably off the land.

Many of the children go to school in Maun, but the adults live in hand built mud and thatch huts with no animals except for the odd pet dog. This is the way people have been living in the Okavango Delta for many years. After the tour there is the opportunity for guests to purchase hand made arts and crafts from the local women before taking a mokoro back to the Afrika Ecco campsite.
