Schulphoek House

Established 1999.  Fully renovated and extended in 2017

Founded in 1999, Schulphoek House offers understated luxury and Cape refinement to its guests.  The house overlooks the bay from which it receives its name; an idyllic cove where whales often visit.

A well known eco-conscious refuge, this protected reserve and its shoreline is also home to many birds, small mammals and marine life which can be viewed on the seashore paths nearby. Whales visit from late August through to December and often stop by in front of the House. We are situated 4 km from Hermanus Town Centre, 2 km from Hemel-en-Aarde intersection; gateway to the wineries

The House comprises fifteen rooms, each one offers thoughtful decor touches and luxurious amenities.  Rooms and bathrooms are individually decorated with a collection of fine original South African art and original pieces of furniture, the focus being on mid-century.

There are different room configurations;  generously sized superior, luxury, standard and family suites offering options with patios overlooking the garden, or with sweeping views of the bay.

You may choose to indulge in the singular beauty of the Cape or read a book from our library in a comfy armchair.  A relaxed and refined experience awaits.

The house is holistically designed to be carbon neutral and bio-dynamic.

Efforts at sustainability began in 1999 with water harvesting, solar heating and a salt water pool and continued in our 2017 build project, which focused solely on sustainable and eco-conscious building practices.

These include -
Solar power to supply the property's entire energy and hot water needs,
Hydronic air conditioning system,
Thermal water heating system & thermally heated towel rails
A unique FRESH AIR exchange system
Water harvesting from all the rooves to above and below ground water storage

The property was awarded a prestigious grant by the Austrian government.  Stellenbosch University monitors the results of the house’s energy consumption for further analysis into sustainability in the Cape Province.

We continue to invest in the local people and the community.  Our aim is to enhance and benefit families that were previously disadvantaged.

Schulphoek staff are sourced from the Hermanus area.  Since many staff come from disadvantaged backgrounds Schulphoek House has invested in on going training and development through learner ship training programmes both internally and externally.  As a 5-Star establishment we are dedicated to delivering service excellence with the local flair of South African traditional hospitality.
