This programme is divided into 3 main sections; Participation, Conservation and Sight Seeing.
Participation: The focus of the programme is on the cheetah and during the course participants are involved with the everyday care of the cheetahs. This includes, cleaning, feeding, and where required, assisting with or observing any veterinary activities that may occur during their stay. The same activities apply to other species being cared for at the centre. The knowledge gained about the animals and work of the HESC through this kind of participation is both specific and personal.
Conservation: This section of the programme involves lectures on all major aspects of con-servation and includes specialist input on all animals, grasses, trees and basic biodiversity.
Sight Seeing: enables participants to put the theory learnt into practice; either through directed observation in the wild or at other centres that specialise in other areas of research or conservation.
The programme of Touring and Volunteering will enable visitors a unique and invaluable experience of assisting a community and its children in an everyday environment.
South Africa is a culturally diverse country, one nation made up of many peoples. As a nation we are known for our humanity. We may have come from a past filled with separation and struggle but our future is one of unity and possi-bilities. In true African spirit, we understand the value of a warm South African welcome, and we can’t wait to welcome you to our Rainbow nation - in 11 official languages. Kayamandi is a suburb just outside Stellenbosch, with a population of about 30 000, generally made up of people who came from the rural areas of South Africa (and even other African countries) in search of work and a better future for themselves and their families. The settlement was established in 1941 and was always characterized by severe material poverty. Though improvements have been made in the last decade, informal settlements still dominate Khayamandi and the absence of parks, playgrounds, shops and social services is evident. The unemployment rate is high. Most residents try to survive, and sometimes manage to thrive, in the informal sector.
