This 15 day adventure encompasses two of Ugandas' top highlights;
- Mountain Gorilla Trekking
- Mountain expedition in the Rwenzoris
About Mountain Gorillas;
There are only just over 1,000 individuals left in the entire world, earning them an endangered title. Each Gorilla Group Family has their own distinct personality, which is why many people choose to trek more than one gorilla group. There are an estimated 36 families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, 12 have been habituated and another 2 are in the process of being habituated. There is also one habituated family in Mgahinga National Park.
A visit to a mountain gorilla family is a life changing experience. Mountain gorillas are highly intelligent, good natured, and fascinating to observe. The silverbacks' powerful presence is awe-inspiring, yet his calm demeanor clearly earns him the title, 'gentle giant'. People are equally struck by the tenderness and care that mothers show their young. And then, of course, there are the juveniles who spend most of every waking hour at play and never cease to make visitors smile.
Mountain gorillas (gorilla beringei beringei), live in colder climates than the other gorilla species, with their longer and thicker fur providing additional warmth. They are usually smaller than their close cousins the Eastern Lowland Gorilla (gorilla beringei graueri). To the untrained eye, all gorillas may appear very similar in appearance, but they have unique nose prints that help to identify individuals.
About the Rwenzoris;
The fabled 'Mountains of the Moon' – lie in western Uganda along the Uganda-Congo border. The equatorial snow peaks include the third highest point in Africa, while the lower slopes are blanketed in moorland, bamboo and rich, moist montane forest. Huge tree-heathers and colourful mosses are draped across the mountainside with giant lobelias and “everlasting flowers”, creating an enchanting, fairytale scene.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects the highest parts of the 120 km-long and 65 km-wide Rwenzori mountain range. The national park hosts 70 mammals and 217 bird species including 19 Albertine Rift endemics, as well as some of the world’s rarest vegetation.
The Rwenzoris are a world-class hiking and mountaineering destination!
