Luebeck is a city in northern Germany, located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and rich cultural history. The city's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to many iconic landmarks such as the Holstentor city gate, St. Mary's Church and the city's famous marzipan museum. Luebeck has also been an important trading center and is known for its role in the Hanseatic League. Luebeck also has a rich artistic and literary history, the famous German novelist Thomas Mann was born and lived in the city and his family home, the Buddenbrook House, is now open to the public as a museum. Luebeck is also surrounded by picturesque towns and villages, such as Travemuende, which is known for its lighthouse, seafood restaurants and as a ferry port for boats to Sweden.
