The Undara Volcanic National Park is a remote and spectacular region located in Queensland, northwestern Australia. Most commonly accessed from Cairns or Townsville, the park is home to 164 volcanoes, as well as cones, vents, and the world-famous Undara Lava Tubes. The tubes were formed more than 190,000 years ago by fast-cooling volcanic rock, and some of them are more than 30 metres wide (make sure to linger at the kilometer-long Bayliss Cave, inhabited by over 50 different animal species). In addition to rich and varied birdlife (emu, eagles, falcons, rosellas, and parrots), it is possible to spot iconic Australian wildlife (kangaroos, goannas, pythons, tree snakes, and hundreds of butterfly species) within the Undara Volcanic National Park.
