Situated in northeastern Utah, Vernal is the county seat of Uintah; a charming but well-equipped large city. It's best known for its annual Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, its Dinosaur National Monument, and the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum - showcasing fossil remains biological specimens, and full-size dinosaur replicas. Vernal is also the gateway to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, an ideal destination for water sports, trout fishing, fly fishing, and river rafting. The Steinaker State Park and the Red Fleet State Park both offer excellent boating and fishing conditions. Other outdoor activities on offer include hiking, biking, and camping surrounded by spectacular natural forests.
Located on the southeastern flank of the Uinta Mountains on the border between Colorado and Utah, Dinosaur National Monument is an American national monument set at the confluence of the Green and Yampa rivers. It is home to Native American rock art, dinosaur fossils, rushing rivers, secluded canyons, and soaring peaks. Visitors can look forward to a wide range of wonderful outdoor activities including river rafting down the Green and Yampa rivers through spectacular wilderness scenes and remote canyons, or hiking along the vast network of trails through the rugged landscape. Other highlights include viewing ancient Petroglyphs and Pictographs, visiting Echo Park, and soaking up the views from Harpers Corner. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the isolated Gates of Lodore, set at the northern tip of Dinosaur National Monument; it serves as the starting point for a variety of multi-day raft trips.
