The sensation of visiting Chã das Caldeiras is incomparable - A landscape all formed by lavas, from the oldest to those of the 2014/2015 eruption, always protected by the imposing volcano and the mountains around the caldera.
We will leave in the morning from São Filipe, passing through the area of Forno, Patim until we reach Achada Furna, a village built to relocate the inhabitants of Chã das Caldeiras, after the 1995 eruption. We will pass by Cabeça Fundão, where you can find the old craters, in a wonderful landscape. Upon arriving at the entrance to the Natural Park, we will make a photo stop, where you can appreciate this lunar landscape. From here we can see the highest peak of Fogo, called “Pico do Fogo”, as well as the 2014 crater.
Then we will get to Portela, one of the villages that was swallowed by the lavas of 2014, which is nowadays already rebuilt with restaurants, small pensions, houses and other small structures. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and we also have the opportunity to taste the traditional Chã das Caldeiras wine, known as “manecon”.
