Palo Verde Cloud Forest Reserve
Nestled just a one-hour drive from San José lies Palo Verde Cloud Forest Reserve. This private reserve is between 1520 and 2085 meters above sea level at the Caribbean watershed of the continental divide at the Talamanca Mountains, a famous and well-known elevation for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
February to May is the best time to look for iconic residents: the Resplendent Quetzal and the Three-wattled Bellbird, whose strange call resonates through the trees. It is also an excellent place to look for hummingbirds, tanagers, toucanets, and many endemic Talamanca birds.
The story of Palo Verde unfolds with the Masís family, who initiated conservation efforts in 1936. In 2016, the farm transformed into a nature reserve, and today, more than 10 kilometers of trails invite exploration and connection. You can also relax by the bird feeders or explore the many native plants to look for more birding opportunities. And for those wishing to linger, a warm welcome awaits; their excellent kitchen offers a delicious lunch or a hearty breakfast with hot coffee to fuel your adventures!
