In modern terms, Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. With a width of 1.7km, the Falls have the capacity to push 550 000m³ of water per minute over the basalt cliff into the Zambezi River Gorge. The cliff over which the Falls thunder transforms the Zambezi from a placid river into a ferocious torrent, cutting through a series of dramatic gorges.
