After your 3-hour drive through the Overberg region, we arrive at Cape Agulhas and visit the historic red and white Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, an icon that denotes the tip of Africa. For the adventurous ones, you can climb the 72 steps up to this 160-year-old lighthouse for some amazing views over the rocky headland of Cape Agulhas.

A little further down the road is the famous monument and geographical meeting place of the mighty Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Get your picture taken at the demarcation slab, whilst also dipping your toes into each ocean.

For those interested in learning about the famous shipwrecks that have occurred along this stretch of coastline, we can visit the wreck of the Mishu Maru on the rocks close by (great photo opportunity) and follow that up with the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum which is home to striking visual displays and a fascinating collection of shipwreck artefacts. Learn about the “woman and children first” protocol which originated when the Birkenhead sank (1852) and later became known as the Birkenhead Drill.

Talking about the Birkenhead, we can stop by the Birkenhead Estate in Stanford which is the first wine and beer brewing estate in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a fantastic beer & wine tasting experience (own account). We return along the coastline through Hermanus, which offers the best land-based whale watching in the world (in season from June – November) over Walker Bay. If you wish, you can enjoy some wine tasting (own account) in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde Valley (Heaven and Earth), visit Stony Point Penguin Colony in Betty’s Bay and slowly return via the scenic Clarens Drive following the False Bay coastline, where on a clear day you can see all the way across to Cape Point.
