Trip Summary

Discover Cape Town through the lens of its most inspiring people and grassroots projects, where creativity, resilience, and activism intersect. Today is about connecting with changemakers, learning their stories, and understanding how art, fashion, and community initiatives are shaping a more inclusive future.

Today, you will be joined by one of the BRAVE Rock Girls, part of a dynamic girl-led movement that empowers young women from under-resourced communities through travel, storytelling, and adventure. BRAVE was born in 2011 when a group of ten-year-old girls from Manenberg stood up to gang violence in their community, drawing inspiration from the iconic anti-apartheid slogan: “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

We begin the day at the Watershed Market, home to local artisans and community-led design. Visit one of the Rock Girl benches, a bold initiative placing benches in public spaces to promote safety and visibility for women. Each bench is a storytelling platform and a symbol of support, connected to resources, role models, and real-time help for women in need.

Next, visit Tari Designs, a fashion social enterprise empowering women through creativity and entrepreneurship. Meet the seamstresses and storytellers behind the brand and discover how over 30 women have launched careers or businesses through Tari’s skills training, life coaching, and mentorship. It’s a powerful space where design drives independence, and where every product has purpose.

After a scenic drive along the Atlantic Seaboard, we break for a casual local lunch and then we head to Masiphumelele, a vibrant township community where you’ll meet Mama Yandi. A passionate community leader and artist. Her home doubles as a workshop where she transforms plastic waste collected from nearby beaches into expressive artwork. Join her in creating your own piece and explore how art and sustainability come together to support single mothers and young creatives in the area. We also visit the Masi Creative Hub, where a community garden and soup kitchen bring nourishment, dignity, and opportunity to local families.

This day offers a rare chance to connect with the heart of Cape Town, guided by those shaping it from the ground up, one story, one skill, one spark at a time.
