Today you will be joined by one of the Rock Girls. BRAVE Rock Girls is a South African nonprofit that creates opportunities for girls and works with those who can provide the resources, knowledge, experience, and safety that girls need to lead. BRAVE is girl-led and uses the challenge of travel and adventure to empower girls from under-served communities to tell their own stories, acquire critical skills, and build networks to assist with education, health care, economic empowerment, and safety. BRAVE was founded by a group of ten-year-old girls from Manenberg, South Africa, in 2011 who wanted to make their gang-ridden community safer – and who called themselves Rock Girls after the anti-apartheid slogan, “When you strike a woman, you strike a rock”.
We will start the day exploring the Watershed Market which is home to a multitude of local artisans, each with unique and beautiful artwork. Here you will see one of the Rock Girl benches, the idea of “eyes on the street”, in the form of benches in prominent places, aims to make cases of assault more visible in communities. Each bench is linked to a toll-free number, which connects women to opportunities, resources, and support, as well as inspiring stories of 75 successful South African women.
Continue your day along the Atlantic Seaboard to Sealand in Hout Bay, which makes bags out of recycled sails. Learn firsthand the process of how this team of creative minds and fabrication specialists behind Sealand Gear, brings the inspired design in upcycled material texture combinations from the drawing board to the rack.
In Hout Bay, you will be able to explore the working fishing harbour and meet the friendly local seals. Browse the local arts and crafts stalls before heading out along the beautiful Atlantic Coastline towards the Peninsula.
We will make our way over the famous coastal road of Chapman’s Peak Drive for lunch we will stop in at the Noordhoek Farm Stall for a delicious local lunch.
After lunch, we head to a local township community, Masiphumelele. Meet Mama Yandi and the amazing ladies that help her and learn all about her township upliftment project helping single mothers. you can get involved in creating your own art with Yandi, who creates art pieces from plastic collected from the Peninsula beaches at her house & workshop in the Township. Also, visit the amazing soup kitchen and garden project run by the Masi Creative Hub.
