At 08:00 AM, we depart from Quito for an unforgettable bike tour in Ecuador. After a scenic drive south for about an hour, we reach the highest point of the day, where we’ll experience a cross-section of Ecuador’s diverse ecosystems in just one day. Surrounded by the stunning Andes Mountains, we’ll be treated to views of snow-capped volcanoes in the Eastern Cordillera, including Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Antisana, and Chimborazo, if we’re lucky with clear skies.
Pedaling across the paramo (Ecuador’s version of the Arctic tundra), we descend through stunning cloud forest, traversing steep Andean slopes before entering the Amazon basin. The route combines dirt and paved roads, with scenic rolling hills that make for an exciting and varied ride.
Our journey begins with a drive to the high pass, “Paso de la Virgen” at 4,200 meters (13,300 feet). From here, the mountain biking adventure begins, descending all the way to Cuyuja, the gateway to the Amazon rainforest.
Along the way, we’ll stop for a nutritious lunch before continuing our journey. Afterward, we’ll drive back up to 3,300 meters and stop for a swim in Papallacta’s hot springs, renowned as some of the best in Ecuador. With crystal-clear waters at ten different temperatures, and views of Antisana Volcano on clear days, this is the perfect spot to relax and recharge.
After our rejuvenating soak, we’ll drive to Ave Maria Pass (4,200 meters), where we’ll bike back towards Quito along the Chiche River basin. This exhilarating ride offers incredible views of paramo, cloud forest, and the river canyon, with the Andean sun lighting the way. The final 18 kilometers take us along the famous railroad line, passing through five tunnels, including one that’s 322 meters long. The ride is full of surprises, with occasional fog adding a touch of chill, so don’t forget your mittens and fleece.
We’ll load the bikes onto the jeep’s roof and head back to Quito, reflecting on the day’s adventure through Ecuador’s varied landscapes.
