Leave the city behind and journey over the dramatic Sir Lowry’s Pass, we’ll make a quick stop at the beloved Peregrine Farmstall for fresh coffee and pastries, a local favourite and the perfect way to fuel up for the adventure ahead.
We continue into the heart of the Overberg, where nature, ocean, and adventure blend seamlessly. Your day begins in the coastal village of De Kelders, named for the ancient, cellar-like caves carved into the limestone cliffs along Walker Bay. These caves are not only a geological wonder but also a site of great historical significance, once home to Middle Stone Age humans and later the Khoikhoi people. Clamber down the pathways to explore this ancient cave system and take in panoramic views of the bay, once a paradise for hunter-gatherers and now a haven for marine life.
Take a scenic walk along the cliff paths of Hermanus, one of the best land-based whale-watching destinations in the world. From elevated vantage points, spot southern right whales and their calves breaching just offshore. Along the way, look out for seals, dolphins, birdlife, and hidden rock pools, ideal for adventurous young explorers.
As we continue along the coast, the scenic R44 route hugs the shoreline from False Bay to Walker Bay, offering incredible ocean views and plenty of opportunities for marine sightings. Along this route, we’ll stop in Betty’s Bay, home to the Stony Point Penguin Colony, where families can watch these charismatic seabirds waddle, preen, and play in their natural environment.
