Trip Summary

A day spent tracking Great Whites and Southern Right Whales, two of the Marine Big five (The Southern Right Whale, Shark, Dolphin, Seal, and Penguin). Heading out of Cape Town to Gansbaai you will experience a Shark Cage Diving exhibition where you will come face to face with a Great White. Stopping for Lunch in Hermanus you will then spend the afternoon tracking the Southern Right Whales, from on land and the air.

Heading out of Cape Town we will drive over Sir Lowry’s Pass before arriving at Kleinbaai, a small harbour town which forms part of Gansbaai – home to Marine Dynamics. The winner of the African Responsible Tourism Awards, Marine Dynamics is a 5* Shark Diving Company that not only gives you the best experience, but also offer extensive information regarding marine research, conservation and education covering Great White and other marine species while on board the vessel.

Returning to shore, the afternoon will be spent tracking whales. Stopping in Hermanus in Bientang’s Cave for lunch there is no way to get closer to the whales and sea for lunch. Created out of a traditional cave which was previously inhabited by a Koi Strandloper of the same name, the restaurant spills out onto the rocks of Walker Bay in Hermanus, where whale watching is the preferred local pastime. Whilst seafood features highly on the menu there are plenty for non seafood eaters.

Leaving the popular Hermanus behind, we head to one of the small villages perched on the cliffs 30 minutes outside Hermanus. It is here that you can experience some of the best land based whale watching in the world as Whales often sidle up right underneath the steep cliffs especially when they have young calves, giving you a bird’s eye view.

Experience the Flight of the Giants- African Wings use planes that make minimum noise and emit low frequency to allow the best airborne view of whales possible. Carrying a maximum at 3 at a time on a 1 hour 10 minute scenic flight over the whales, sharks and Southernmost tip of Africa. This is the ultimate way to whale watch.

We will then return to Cape Town via the scenic R44 that hugs the coast line all the way from Walker Bay to False Bay. On route back you still stand a good chance of spotting whales and dolphin en route. We will stop at Betty’s Bay to enjoy see the Penguins before heading back to Cape Town.
