Our first port of call is Bloubergstrand for classic picture-postcard views of the city and Table Mountain.

We continue north along the Atlantic coast to the West Coast National Park, a rare biome formed by prehistoric changes in sea levels situated around the Langebaan Lagoon. The park is a paradise for some 55 000 birds, belonging to more than 150 species, that gather here each year – many migrating from northern climes to breed.

After spending some time in one of the bird hides we visit the information centre at Geelbek, a historic farm and national monument. During spring (August – September) we drive through a private section of the park to see bontebok, eland and zebra grazing amidst vast carpets of spring blooms, a feature for which this landscape is famous.

After lunch, we return to the city, pausing to view the Moravian Mission Station at Mamre, and possibly, stopping off at the West Coast Ostrich Farm or Fossil Park en route.
