Trip Summary

A day spent exploring the R44 that hugs the coastline all the way from False Bay to Walker Bay. Your whale watching will start here with a good chance of spotting whales and dolphin en route. Stopping for Lunch in Hermanus we will then explore the coastline from cliff top and aerial view before exploring the wine farms around the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

Heading out of Cape Town we will take the scenic R44 that hugs the coast line all the way from False Bay to Walker Bay. Your whale watching will start here with a good chance of spotting whales and dolphin enroute. We will stop at Betty’s Bay to enjoy see the Penguins a great alternative to the Penguins on the Cape Peninsular as their tends to be less people and the Penguins are often slipping in and out of the sea from the rocks they now call home.

Stopping in Hermanus in Bientang’s Cave for lunch there is no way to get closer to the whales and sea for lunch. Created out of a traditional cave which was previously inhabited by a Koi Strandloper of the same name, the restaurant spills out onto the rocks of Walker Bay in Hermanus, where whale watching is the preferred local pastime. Whilst seafood features highly on the menu there are plenty for non seafood eaters.

Leaving the popular Hermanus behind, we head to one of the small villages perched on the cliffs 30 minutes outside Hermanus. It is here that you can experience some of the best land based whale watching in the world as whales often sidle up right underneath the steep cliffs especially when they have young calves, giving you a bird's eye view.

Experience the Flight of the Giants- African Wings use planes that make minimum noise and emit low frequency to allow the best airborne view of whales possible. Carrying a maximum at 3 at a time on a 1 hour 10 minute scenic flight over the whales, sharks and southernmost tip of Africa. This is the ultimate way to whale watch.

We will then head inland to explore the Hemel - en Aarde Valley. This valley unites the passion and reputation of fifteen wineries, each growing small volumes of premium quality wine in carefully and sustainably managed vineyards. While these wines draw wine lovers from all over the world, the pristine shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the towering mountain ranges and fynbos-clad hills add to the attraction – to guarantee visitors to the Hermanus Wine Route a memorable experience.
