Trip Summary

2-nights in the beautifully restored farm cottages at Boschendal Wine Estate. With an emphasis on stylish simplicity, the guest cottages are authentic and rural yet contemporary in character. Includes breakfast daily.

Boschendal lies between the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Location, the sheer scale, natural splendour and history make exploring Boschendal compelling. It beguiles and inspires wonder with its unique spirit of place. With cottages scattered across the vast expanse and changing landscapes of the property, guests have a chance to immerse themselves into the many layers of South Africa’s second oldest wine farm. Dating back to 1685, Boschendal is a place where generations of families have worked.

Located near the Franschhoek Valley deep inside the Cape’s Floral Kingdom, it is a place where over 600 species of fynbos and 1000 hectares of protected nature reserve intertwine with fruit orchards. It is a spectacular, bio-diverse environment. It is a place where grass-fed Angus cattle, forest-fed pigs and free range chickens work alongside farmers to replenish and revitalise the soils. It is a place where ducks help gardeners grow exquisite bio-dynamic produce for our two restaurants. It is a place where guests can swim in the dams and feel comfortable picking fruit from the orchards. The only choice to make is whether to explore this magical place by foot, by pedal or by horse.

Activities
With privileged access to the farm, guests staying in the cottages will be able to savour the best of farm living. Join a farm tour or explore the estate on foot, following trails that take you through orchards and mountain fynbos. There are mountain biking routes, walking paths, caves to explore, wine tasting, cellar tours, swimming in the dams and plenty of opportunities to sit, read, relax and generally take in the goodness of life.

Dining
First and foremost the focus is on providing flavourful and nourishing farm-to-table food; celebrating the bountiful produce of Boschendal and the Franschhoek valley with menus that shift with the seasons. Much of the fresh produce you’ll find on your plate is sustainably grown right on Boschendal Farm, and where possible they source other ingredients from farms and small producers in the surrounding Winelands. In fact, across the restaurants they work hard to keep food miles to a minimum: three-quarters of the ingredients on the daily restaurant menu are sourced within 30-kilometres of the farm.

With such a wonderful array of local produce on offer, it’s little surprise that the team of skilled chefs, under Executive Chef Allistaire Lawrence, conjure up a mouth-watering feast of dishes at restaurants across the estate.

Wines
Given the exceptional winemaking heritage of almost 300 years, the Boschendal cellar masters meticulously balance rustic tradition and modern innovation to produce classic, fruity wines while upholding the ecological integrity that has become synonymous with the brand.

Each wine range, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, is carefully crafted to deliver ultimate drinking pleasure, with dedicated red and white winemakers in separate cellars for focused expertise. It is this attention to detail that makes them a leader in the production of Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines and a beloved brand in over 50 countries.
