For those with a sense of adventure, a 4×4 drive up the highest road pass in Africa will certainly provide you with a hefty dose of adrenalin. For your efforts, you’ll be rewarded with its breathtaking scenery.
From Durban, we drive through the green hills of the Midlands towards the little country town of Underberg which is just under 3 hours from Durban. Here, our 4×4 vehicle awaits us…the only form of transport equipped to tackle Sani Pass! We rise from the starting point at 1544m all the way up to a dizzying 2876m! This is the spot where both Ford and Nissan chose to showcase their newest vehicles, and it is a challenging climb for any vehicle. The road was first ascended by a vehicle in 1948 by a RAF spitfire pilot in an old Land Rover, but we do it in a little more comfort.
You’ll have your passport stamped as we enter the Kingdom of Lesotho who’s motto is “Peace, rain, prosperity”. We will visit a Basotho village and then lunch (included) is served at the highest pub in Africa – truly – and, it stands to reason, the views are utterly breathtaking. Afterwards, we wind our way slowly back down the pass and relax on our return to Durban with a possible stop at the Howick Waterfall if time allows

The 4×4 ride is part of a small group, only the road transfer from Durban is private.
We need to arrive into the town of Underberg by 08:45am, so a start from Durban central later than 06:00am is not possible on this tour.
Although Kwa-Zulu Natal is considered a sub-tropical climate and should be rather warm & humid, the weather can be tricky in the Drakensberg Mountains, so make sure you bring both short & long light clothing with comfortable walking shoes.
