Trip Summary

Contemporary and urban art tour in Callao

Callao Monumental | 4-hour tour accompanied by one of our friends in the city | Not only is Lima firmly grounded in artistic traditions born in pre-Columbian times and developed throughout the colonial period, the city is at the forefront of a thriving contemporary art movement in Latin America. During this excursion, you will visit Callao Monumental, an avante gardé artistic space for contemporary and urban art in Lima, gaining insight and perspective on what’s currently happening in the art scene.

The port district of Callao was founded in 1537 by Spanish colonists and quickly became the principle port for Spanish commerce in the Pacific. Once one of the most affluent parts of Lima, Callao has suffered much economic decline over the years. The Callao Monumental project showcases contemporary urban art, champions local artists and engages with the community through its outreach and regeneration work. The heart of the project is located in the historic Ronald Building, a covered market built by a British engineer, and renovated for this project. It consists of six floors of independent restaurants, artisanal fabric boutiques, galleries and studio space for resident artists.  From the rooftop of the building there is a spectacular view of the surrounding area, including the harbor and the modern commercial port, the naval base and the historic Real Felipe fortress.

You’ll begin by being picked up at your Lima hotel and taken to Callao monumental in a private vehicle with your friend in the city. Your tour will take you through Plaza Matriz Pisconi and include a private walking tour through Callao’s vibrant street art scene for a unique perspective on contemporary Peruvian urban culture. Inside the building you’ll peruse the private galleries, art studio spaces and interact with artists in residence.

The area is also home to a range of popular restaurants including Cabos, El Comedor, Barra D 7, Love Food Bar, Rovira, Mateo and El Ítalo. Graffiti Street Art workshops can also be arranged on request with advance notice (supplementary price applies).

*Attractions to be visited subject to opening hours, availability of artists and length of visit.
