Trip Summary

Umkumbe Bush Lodge is a luxury tented camp located in a world-renowned Big 5 reserve. Nestled under a canopy of indigenous trees, this tented treehouse-style camp is the first of its kind.

Resting comfortably under a canopy of indigenous trees in the southern stretches of the Sabi Sand, sits the inimitable and understated Umkumbe Bush Lodge. This luxury tented camp offers all the creature comforts from home, and is the first of its kind in the reserve. The build of the lodge is based on the idea of glamping, but with a luxurious twist.

Umkumbe Bush Lodge's claim to fame? That would have to be the expansive boma area rivalling neighbouring lodges!

Built around a weeping boer-bean, the lofty treehouse atmosphere of the main lodge overlooks a variety of habitats - a winding drainage line leading to the seasonal Sand River, a forested thicket and a section of open savanna. It's here where guests will find a modern bar area, coffee station, breakfast and lunch restaurant area, and a cosy loft area.

There are plenty of relaxation spaces to soak up the sights and sounds of the African bush! The sparkling pool and surrounding deck area provides the perfect place to relax during the balmy summer season.

Accommodation wise, the lodge can accommodate up to 10 guests in five Meru-style tented suites. There is one luxury suite and four standard suites. The luxury Leadwood suite is totally secluded and has its own private view of the drainage line below. It also boasts a bathtub, his/hers sinks and an outdoor shower. It is also the only room that can accommodate up to two children.

Suite facilities include a tea/coffee station, standing fan, air con, hand luggage stand, hair dryer, mosquito net, safe, bathroom amenities, changeable twin/double bed configurations and a private seating area on a raised wooden deck.

Activities include two game drives a day and take place on the same traverse as Umkumbe Safari Lodge. Avid safari-goers can enjoy sundowner set-ups, coffee stops and all the extras synonymous with a Kruger safari.  Umkumbe Bush Lodge embodies the true Kruger safari experience.

Safari Experience
One of the main aims of going on safari is to go on a game drive. On game drives you are able to get a lot closer to big game. The animals are generally habituated to the vehicle. This means that they are used to the vehicle approaching them and know that it never causes them harm. All game drives are conducted in open 4 x 4 game viewers, which allow for  360 degree views of wildlife and wilderness.

Two game drives are offered per day. On the morning drive there is a stop for coffee and on the afternoon drive you will stop for sundowners. After sundowners guests will get to experience a night drive. The night drives allow guests the opportunity to see the nocturnal animals not encountered during the day. You can see a wide variety of animals not normally seen during the day, including leopards, hyenas, serval, porcupines, bush babies, genet cats and nocturnal birds like owls and nightjars.

For the more energetic, each day after breakfast there is the option of a morning bush walk, which is in ENGLISH only. The walk is an opportunity to experience the bushveld at close quarters. All walking safaris are led by qualified rangers. They will explain the animal tracks and what animals passed through during the night, in addition to the sophistication of termite mounds and other interesting facets of the bush that go unnoticed on game drives.
