Your tour will begin with a brief discussion about Apartheid followed by a visit to the District 6 Museum which tells the story of forced removals - the majority being of the so-called coloured community. The tour then takes us to the Bo-Kaap community who managed to avoid forced removal from the central district of Cape Town. One of the most photographed areas of the city is the Bo-Kaap area with its brightly coloured houses. A stroll around the neighbourhood includes a visit to a local spice shop. We then have the priviledge to enter the home of a local community member for a cooking class where you will experience the authenticity of the Bo-Kaap culture and learn how to fold samosas, make roti, chillie bites, and the local Cape Malay Curry. Lunch, made in part by your own hand, is hosted in the home.

You start the day at Truth Coffee, one of the Cape’s most famous micro coffee roasters, where your guide will give you a brief background of how Apartheid affected communities in this area. Next is a visit to the District 6 Museum which unapologetically presents the details of the forced removal of over 60 000 people from District 6, an area on the edge of Cape Town. The Bo-Kaap was the only area in the city of Cape Town where its Cape Malay community was not forcefully removed. Bright and colourful homes fill the area that is one of the most photographed places in Cape Town. Enjoy a walk around the area and visit Atlas spices (which is the main spice shop), before heading into a home of one of the ladies in the area for a hands on cooking class.
During your visit you will:
- Make roti’s from scratch
- Fold and fry samoosas
- Make Chilli bites
- Learn the secrets to make a traditional Cape Malay curry
- Enjoy the food you have prepared with an interesting cup of cardamom tea and a delicious koesister (local doughnut made with spices, dipped in syrup and then rolled in dry coconut) Depending on time constraints, after lunch, you can continue to walk around the Bo-Kaap and pop into some of the shops.
