The aim of the day is to explore the highlights of the Cape Peninsula, looking for any excuse to embrace the ocean and the great outdoors in this unique and spectacular habitat to explore one of the most unique marine habitats in the world.
Let the aroma of the best coffee in Muizenberg, gear you up for the waves awaiting you! The early morning will be spent in Muizenberg where we will enjoy a tour of WAWA surfboard Shop in Muizenberg, here they build wooden surfboards that are inspired by the intuited hydronamic genius of the ancient Hawaiian board builders. Handcrafted, Wawa boards allow for a wave-sliding experience that, until recently, lay buried in the dust of museums.
The morning will be spent in Muizenberg where we will spend our time enjoying a surf lesson, the best place to get to grips with riding the waves in South Africa under the guidance of your Adventure Guide before chasing the swell around the peninsula. You will don a wetsuit, get all geared up and by the end of the morning, you will be a pro on the waves amongst all the locals!
Next, we head to Kalk Bay where we will walk through this very quaint old holiday town filled with antique shops, galleries, craftsmen and vendors shooting as we go. Kalk Bay is a working fishing community filled with brightly coloured boats, some noisy seals, and even louder ladies hard at work processing the day’s catch!
From here, we will drive along the coast towards Simon’s Town, where we will search for our own rogue penguins – a splinter colony away from the crowded boardwalks over the main breeding site, on a beach known mostly to locals. Perhaps if the weather is favourable you could test out your balancing skills on a stand-up paddle board to really get to know the penguins in their own environment. (This is optional). Your guide will tell you more about the rich history surrounding this naval town, the museums and monuments provide plenty of insight into this historical harbour town.
We will then continue on to the Cape of Good Hope. In the Peninsula Reserve, we will enjoy a gentle hike exploring secluded beaches, shipwrecks and this region’s unique wildlife while on the hunt for the Cape 5 (Ostrich, Baboons, Mountain Zebra, Bontebok and Tortoise). Along the way, we will find a secluded scenic spot to enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic in a beautiful setting.
Time Allowing: We may include a stop in Kommetjie, the epicenter of high-performance surfing on the Cape Peninsula, providing ideal conditions for surfers of all ages and abilities in a wide range of beach breaks, points and reefs. Facing Chapman’s Peak on a promontory at the south end of Noordhoek Beach, an established learning ground teeming with surf rats. Because this spot faces almost due north, the southwest wind is offshore here, making it one of the few spots that can handle this wind. The downside is that the swell has to bend from the exposed west side of the coast, almost doing a U-turn to reach this north-facing break. The refraction focuses clean lines towards the beach that result in left-breaking peaks that run for at least 40-60 metres before ending in a shore break close-out.
Wind the afternoon down by heading back towards the city centre along the most scenic drive of all: Chapman's Peak. Stop at a magical surprise location for an early evening drink as a local.
