A day of contrasts, beginning by getting close and personal with the Great White Sharks in Gansbaai followed by an afternoon exploration of the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
Today you head out of Cape Town and drive via the R44 a scenic coastal route which will allow you perfect vistas of this spectacular coastline.
You arrive at Gansbaai to go Great White cage diving. As soon as there are active sharks in the area, the specially constructed dive cages immerse you into the aptly names Shark Alley, famous for having the best shark viewing in the world. Nowhere in the world is there such an abundance of Great White sharks, drawn here by the vast numbers of seal and bird colonies on the islands. The sheer thrill of a Great White passing within touching distance must rate top of any adrenalin junkie’s wish list.
Returning to our Adventure Utility Vehicle (AUV) our journey will head inland to Stanford. For lunch, we will stop at one of the lovely local restaurants at Stanford. The Tasting Room restaurant has a reputation for relaxation with an emphasis on fresh and inventive food of an exceptionally high standard. The chalkboard menu changes daily according to what is locally fresh and available, including items from our own vegetable garden.
This afternoon, we venture to the small villages, perched on the cliffs above the bay. From an elevated vantage point, you have a birds-eye view of the whales, and may possibly even see some calves. After thousands of years the crash of waves has carved a series of underground caves into the cliffs and these contain a glittering array of stalactites and stalagmites as well as ocean-filled rock pools, perfect for swimming.
We return to Franschhoek, enjoy breathtaking views of mountains, valleys and fynbos as you make your way back to your hotel.
