Perito Moreno Glacier is the park’s most famous and imposing residence. Visitors travel from around the world to set eyes on the magnificent sight of this ever-growing natural phenomenon, which stretches three miles wide and 200 feet high above Lake Argentino. Watch as the evolving landscape takes shape in front of you, with huge chunks of ice breaking free from the main body of Perito, booming into the lake below and sending a mesmerising shower of water hundreds of feet into the air. The waves and dramatic crashes caused by these continual movements are a display of true natural beauty.
The tour begins at El Calafate, setting off on a comfortable one-hour drive, which leads us to Los Glaciares National Park, with the first breathtaking glimpse of Moreno coming into view as we travel towards Lago Argentino; the unforgettable scenery further enhanced by the imposing Andean Mountains in the background.
Expert guides will be waiting to welcome us when we arrive at a captivating, uninhabited beach, where we then make our way to a small shelter, before taking the next steps in this spellbinding journey. Participants will be divided into groups of (maximum 20 persons per group) before heading out along the lake’s shore and towards the edge of the glacier, you will receive your crampons and helmets, which will aid a more comfortable trekking experience. Once on the ice, you will receive a brief safety talk and will begin the walk. You will then set out on an unforgettable adventure (around one hour and a half) across this fascinating landscape, entering another world of the most incredible blue ice formations, hidden crevasses and gentle streams winding through gullies and pooling into small lagoons.
The level of trekking here is considered to be ‘moderate’, and although the ice surface is irregular, it is also firm and perfectly safe. Having conquered our trek on the glacier, we can then enjoy a gentle stroll through the forest, as we make our way back to the shelter for a well-deserved rest, before returning to the pier, the lake.
The excursion includes free time so participants can enjoy and explore Perito Moreno Glacier catwalks. It will be possible to enjoy spectacular and panoramic views of the glacier and go through some of the self-guided trails.
We will also have an opportunity to uncover the National Park's wildlife, with a walk among their native surroundings. A guided hike through the National Park will offer the chance to spot Andean Condors, Buff-Necked Ibis, Black-Chested Buzzard Eagles, Ashy-Headed Geese and many other unusual species known to inhabit the myriad of scenic trekking trails that dissect the rolling hills and plains surrounding the lake.
