Trip Summary

Nairobi National Park, A short drive out of Nairobi’s central business district is the Nairobi National Park. Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the city scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is located near Nairobi National Park. This orphanage for Elephant Calves and Rhinos from all over Kenya was founded and still managed by Daphne Sheldrick, the widow of one of Kenya’s best known Game Wardens David Sheldrick.

Karen Blixen Museum was once the centre piece of a farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills owned by Danish Author Karen and her Swedish Husband, Baron Bror von Blixen Fincke. Located 10km from the city centre, the Museum belongs to a different time period in the history of Kenya.

Giraffe Centre is located in Langata, just outside Nairobi. The centre has been ostensibly set up as a breeding centre for the endangered Rothschild giraffe, but now operates conservation/education programs for Kenyan school children.

0600hrs: Pick up from your hotel for a morning game drive at Nairobi National Park.

Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park was Kenya’s first National Park. Located approximately 7 kilometers from Nairobi city centre, Nairobi National Park is the only protected area in the world with a variety of wild animals and birds so close to a capital city.

The park has a diversity of environments with fauna and flora, open grass plains with acacia bushes are predominant at the park. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest in the south. To the south of the park is the Athi-Kapiti Plains and Kitengela Migration and dispersal area – vital areas for herbivores dispersal during the rains and concentrate in the park in the dry season.

0900 Hrs:  Transferred to David Sheldrick. At the heart of the DSWT’s conservation activities is the Orphans’ Project, which has achieved world-wide acclaim through its hugely successful elephant and rhino rescue and rehabilitation program. The Orphans’ Project exists to offer hope for the future of Kenya’s threatened elephant and rhino populations as they struggle against the threat of poaching for their ivory and horn, and the loss of habitat due to human population pressures and conflict, deforestation and drought.

1200 Hrs: Lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant

1400hrs-1530hrs: A short tour to the home of coffee pioneer, Karen Blixen is now preserved as a museum. A visit to this museum provides an opportunity to step back in time and gain an insight into this remarkable woman’s life.  This museum is one of the very interested regional museums and archeological and pre historic sites of the national museum of Kenya. And it continues to be an immensely popular tourist attractions

1630 Hrs: The endangered Rothschild giraffe breeding programmes started with the inception of the Giraffe Centre back then in 1979. The giraffes breed naturally in an approximate 120 Acerage of land and the young calves born at the centre are introduced back into the wild at the age of 2years. The giraffes at the centre are closely observed and monitored by AFEW staff and when need be their natural diet is supplemented with Lucerne Grass, salt blocks and carrots. Ever since the breeding started, the centre has handled over 50 Rothschild Giraffes and most of them have been introduced back into the wild in selected Kenya’s protected areas.
