Days 3 - 5: Tarangire National Park

Tue. 18 Sep 2018 - Thu. 20 Sep 2018

On the morning of Day 3 we will head to Tarangire National Park where we will spend the next three nights. Tarangire has the largest concentration of Elephant and Buffalo herds in East Africa and a great variety of other plains game, including wildebeest, zebra, eland, impala and giraffe. Tarangire is also home to lesser kudu and Oryx.

Cow and Calf elephant herds of several hundreds sometimes numbering over 500 are a common sight, with Buffalo herds of several thousand also seen in the southern confines of the park. Predators within Tarangire are numerous, however, like much of Tanzania’s big game country, a keen eye is needed to spot Lion and Cheetah whilst Leopard are probably the most often seen feline predator.

Our camp in Osunyai Lamarkau lies within the territory of one of Tarangire’s largest Lion prides numbering over 20 individuals controlled by 4 splendid Black Maned Lions.

Still very much underrated on the northern circuit, Tarangire is, in our opinion a closely guarded secret and a jewel for game viewing both in the dry and green seasons.

Osunyai Lamarkau sits facing the rising sun on the edge of the wilderness zone, affording stunning game viewing by 4WD or on foot accompanied by an armed Ranger. Night game drives are also available, as are small ‘fly camp’ overnight sleep outs for the more adventurous.

Due to the location of Osunyai Lamarkau and the sunrise setting, the camp affords a glimpse of true exclusivity-the last true luxury in travel. Add in the location on the edge of the wilderness zone within Tarangire-far from the main circuit, Osunyai Lamarkau is, without a doubt the most remote of any accommodations within the park.

Close by, the Masai live a traditional lifestyle pre dating the national park and cultural visits can be arranged for anyone interested in seeing how these warrior tribes live their daily lives. Visits are not intended to be a set show, more an exchange of interest between our guests and whomever is in the dwelling at the time of the visit.

Mon. 24 Sep 2018

Today you’ll experience first hand what has been called “one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.” Standing at 2236m above sea level, Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and is surrounded by very steep walls rising 610m from the floor. Covering an area of 259 sq. km, it is a veritable haven for wildlife.

Leaving early in the morning and taking a picnic lunch with you, you will spend most of the day game driving on the floor of the crater. The crater is home to an amazing concentration and diversity of wildlife, perhaps most importantly the rare black rhinoceros.

Day 10: Eastern Serengeti

Tue. 25 Sep 2018

This morning we will head out to the Serengeti. Our first night will be spent in Central Serengeti. The Serengeti National Park is the home of The Great Migration-the largest land based migration on Earth. At any time of year, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra congregate together en masse creating an unsurpassed wildlife spectacle. The dry season from June thru October bears witness to the huge herds arriving from the short grass plains where the winds from the Indian Ocean have diminished the grasslands and forced the huge herds towards the north.

Days 11 - 13: Northern Serengeti

Wed. 26 Sep 2018 - Fri. 28 Sep 2018

In the morning of Day 11 we will continue our drive up to Northern Serengeti, game drive enroute, where we will spend the next three nights. Like the southern plains, predators and prey live out a daily battle of life and death amidst the greatest diversity of wildlife, in a setting unsurpassed in any big game country in Africa.

Our camp at Akiba Kibwe with its westerly setting, epitomizes the true spirit of a romance under canvas. Each accommodation tent has uninterrupted views west, sited to maximize the classic African landscape.

Sitting in the very north of the Serengeti National Park, Akiba Kibwe lies directly in the route of the migrating wildebeest and zebra as they head towards the Mara River.

Game viewing has a completely different feel to the south with a twist of similarities that compliments both locations. The river creates an exciting backdrop and alternative wildlife haven to the surrounding short grass plains and kopje systems that dot the valleys of the north. Like its sister camp in the Southern Serengeti, Akiba Kibwe activities are all about big game predator and prey interaction with more than a little theater thrown in.
