We set off from Cape Town, past Worcester and De Doorns, and up the escarpment to Matjiesfontein. We visit the historic Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein, a small oasis in the semi-desert where time stood still. After a visit to Laingsburg we head for the Karoo Escarpment, and slowly make our way to the top along winding farm roads, pausing to admire the unfolding views. We will wind along the quiet farm roads through the Moordenaars Karoo, along the canyon of the Dwyka River, and eventually ascend the steep escarpment to the Roggeveld. The pass cuts through spectacular geological deposits dating back to the time before the dinosaurs. Your guide will give you a brief introduction to the fascinating geology of the Karoo, explaining the origins of these rugged mountains. We arrive in sleepy Sutherland, a small town typically built around its impressive church.
A part of our tour is devoted to experiencing the fascinating world of astronomy, for which Sutherland has become famous. We tour the South African Astronomical Observatory, a collection of telescopic installations, owned and operated by various countries and organisations. The newest addition is the Southern African Large Telescope (S.A.L.T.), one of the most powerful in the world. We take a tour of the town and surrounding countryside. We also explore the Boer War cemetery on the outskirts of town and there is time for a stroll in the veld to enjoy the fresh air. This evening (weather permitting) we will visit a private observatory for stargazing through state-of-the-art telescopes.
HOMEWARD BOUND...
We journey home via the scenic Route 62, stopping for lunch in historic Montagu.
Once safely back in Cape Town, you will be taken to your doorstep, where you can relive the memories of the crisp, clear Karoo air.
