Situated on Lake Victoria in Uganda 23km off shore from Entebbe is Ngamba island chimpanzee sanctuary managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Trust (CSWCT).  It has been set up by a group of concerned organizations including Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in order to offer a facility for orphaned chimpanzees where they can co-habitat in a near natural environment.

These 48 lucky chimpanzees were saved from being destined for life as a pet or in a lab in the west.  They were all confiscated by authorities and brought to the sanctuary for care and rehabilitation.  The beautifully forested tropical island is almost 100 acres in size and boasts over 50 different types of vegetation that the chimps utilize.  The chimpanzees are free to roam this forest, exploring their environment and foraging for food at their leisure.

Unfortunately chimps are still being illegally taken out of the wild and sanctuaries like this one are needed throughout Africa as in most cases the animals cannot be returned to their original habitat. Several international organizations such as IFAW and the Jane Goodall Institute are determined to stop this exploitation, and to help these animals. Ngamba Island is one of the projects supported b them and by visiting it you can also assist as a proportion of the fees collected goes directly towards the project.

Day 4: Southern Queen Elizabeth National Park

Tracking chimpanzee in their natural habitat will be an experience you will never forget.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda's most popular game conservancies; within its - almost - 2000 square kilometres (772 square miles) it harnesses sprawling savannah, voluptuously fertile forest, lakes and wetlands which means it offers refuge to a huge diversity of game.  The endless Ishasha plains, dotted with fig trees, are hunting grounds for lion. Rare sitatunga antelope live here and so does the Uganda Kob, with his graceful rearward leaning horns. The Kyambura Gorge to the northeast of the park, with its thick tree top canopy strung with vines, and the Maramagambo Forest, south of the Kasinga Channel are both chimp country, hear them even if you don't see them, shrieking as they crash around at the top of the forest.

The Rwenzori Mountains, or, as dubbed by the Alexandrian Greek geographer Ptolemy in 150 AD, Lunae Montes, the Mountains of the Moon, form the impressive backdrop to this park; the highest peaks are permanently snowcapped, and are one of the sources of the Nile.

Few reserves in the world can boast such a high biodiversity rating and with landscapes including savannah, bushland, wetlands and lush forests as Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 5: Southern Queen Elizabeth National Park

The Kazinga Channel is thought to home of the planet's largest concentration of hippo, the wetlands and forest yield cover and food for over 600 species of birds including the pouting shoebill which stands 1.2 meters (4 foot) tall and wears a permanently mildly amused expression, as if enjoying a private joke.
