Day notes

Meet your guide and climb into a Volkswagen 181 convertible for a memorable guided day tour of Bali. These retro vehicles were built to handle rough terrain and today’s journey will venture off the island’s main roads to showcase a more authentic side of Bali.

Start with a drive to Pura Gunung Kawi. Set amid lush rice terraces in the village of Tampaksiring, the 11th-century temple can only be accessed by a series of stair cases. The effort is worth it, arriving at the top to admire a series of ten shrines carved directly into a cliff face. See elements of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, learning from your guide about the significance of the temple and its carvings.

Continue to nearby Pura Tirta Empul, a popular water temple for local devotees. Discover why water is such an important element in Balinese Hindu culture, hearing how it is used as a holy medium at special ceremonies. Then take a soak in Tirta Empul’s cool spring water, with the water pouring from the numerous fountains that fill the pools.

Return to the convertible and take another scenic drive to the slopes of Gunung Batur. Enjoy the views as the car winds its way up to the edge of the volcano’s 12 km wide caldera. After snapping photos here, continue to a nearby restaurant for lunch with sweeping views of Batur and its turquoise lake.

Following lunch, drive on more scenic roads, pausing to take photos or to chat with the friendly locals. A special stop will be made in Penglipuran, a traditional countryside village well known for its typical Balinese entrance gates and unique architectural traditions. Then it’s on to Tegalalang Village for a leisurely one-hour trek through its verdant rice terraces and on to a coffee plantation for a cup of coffee and a snack.

Following this insightful glimpse into village life, hop back in your convertible VW and soak up a few more of the island’s spectacular views before arriving at your hotel late this afternoon.

The evening is at leisure.

Day 11

Seminyak

Day notes

Today, we invite you to engage with the local community in a truly authentic way with an Evolved Experience. The Evolved Traveler believes travel is “evolving” into something more than we have previously experienced or knew it to be. There is a desire for it to be more meaningful, more impactful, more enriching, and certainly more engaging. We understand our guests wish to travel with a purpose and to truly engage with the cultures they visit, and that is why we have created the Evolved Experience.

Evolved Experiences are a core and unique component to all our journeys that provide you, our Evolved Traveler, with experiences that far exceed the par-for-the-course of luxury travel. Evolved Experiences allow our guests the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the communities they visit, extend their hand in a gesture of global community, and create memories that can be cherished for years to come, not only for themselves but for those they visit.

We invite you to spend the morning at the R.O.L.E. Foundation (Rivers, Oceans, Lands and Ecology), a non-profit humanitarian organization whose aim is to improve the education, well-being, and self-reliance of people living in underprivileged circumstances, whilst ensuring environmental resilience and sustainability. They provide free education, skills training programs, and grassroots community assistance to alleviate poverty and ensure environmental sustainability for a happier, healthier future and promote gender equality and empowerment of women.

Depart the hotel this morning and be greeted by the staff at R.O.L.E. who welcome you with tea/coffee and Balinese cakes. You will then spend time in workshops of approximately 30 – 45 minutes each engaging with the participants in a variety of ways.

Workshop 1: Meet the students at Bali WISE Campus. Sit down together and communicating to get to hear their story of life.

Workshop 2: Prepare traditional medicinal drinks made of herbal medicines from natural plant materials such as roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves, and fruit.

Workshop 3: Recycle discarded soap from hotels throughout Bali that is then distributed to poor communities in need of hygiene products.

Workshop 4: The local community promotes and preserves Bali’s cultural heritage through the revival of traditional natural dye and weaving techniques. Learn about this traditional practice by weaving organic cotton and try your hand at natural dying.

By applying the basic life skill methods and techniques covered in these courses, students can learn how to better provide for basic needs using local resources in cost-effective, culturally appropriate, healthy, and environmentally friendly ways.

You will return to your hotel early this afternoon and have the remainder of the day at leisure.

PLEASE NOTE: Believing that engaging authentically with the local community, and even those less fortunate should not be viewed as a “tour,” and wanting the experience to be truly rewarding for all concerned, The Evolved Traveler does not pass the cost of this program onto our guests.
