Located in the Death Valley National Park, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is situated in the central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells. Surrounded by mountains, the dunes are about 100 feet high and feature three types of dunes known as a crescent, linear and star-shaped. In between the dunes are creosote bush and mesquite trees, which used to cover the valley before the dunes intruded. The best time to visit the dunes is just before sunrise or sunset because of the incredible show of colour and light, which makes for a perfect photo opportunity. Visitors can walk and take in the natural beauty of the landscape as well as enjoy sand boarding along the silky, rippled dunes.
