Visitors can embark on a unique journey to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, nestled about 25 kilometres west of Sandakan in the beautiful state of Sabah, Malaysia. Established in 1964, this centre stands as a beacon of hope, being the first official project dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned baby orangutans rescued from logging sites, plantations, and illegal hunting, or those previously kept as pets. Here, these magnificent creatures are meticulously trained to survive in the wild and are released once they are ready. The sanctuary is enveloped within the lush expanse of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, which spans an impressive 4,294 hectares (10,610 acres), much of it untouched rainforest. Today, the reserve is home to around 60 to 80 orangutans living freely in their natural habitat.
