Maiden’s Cove, in the prestigious suburb of Camps Bay in Cape Town, with the green Western Cape Mountains at its back, and Clifton and Glen Beaches on either side, faces the cold Atlantic Ocean. From here you can enjoy not only incredible views of the sea but also the Twelve Apostles and Table Mountain as well.
The beach is famous for its tidal pool which is protected from the waves by massive rounded boulders. When the wind isn’t blowing, there are a number of great spots in which to sunbathe and for children to explore safely at low tide. Even though the water is chilly, it’s also irresistible on days when the weather is hot.
Humans aren’t the only ones to find Maiden’s Cove alluring. Dolphins frolic here all year and Southern Rights and Humpback Whales pass by between June and November, splashing the ocean’s surface with their powerful flukes, blowing fountains or even leaping out of the water only to crash back down again. The abundance of marine life makes Maiden’s Cove the perfect spot for free diving. Its grassed area is a wonderful place to spend a lazy afternoon having a delicious barbeque or braai, as it’s known in southern Africa, and watch the sunset beyond the Atlantic Ocean horizon.
