Xintiandi is a car-free eating, shopping, and entertainment district in Shanghai. Today, the wider area centered around Madang Road which includes both pedestrian-only and motor traffic roads are also considered part of Xintiandi. Here, visitors will find houses that now serve as book stores, cafes and restaurants, and shopping malls. Most of the cafes and restaurants feature both indoor and outdoor seating. An active nightlife can be enjoyed in this district during the week and over weekends. This is the most expensive area to live in China, with some apartments costing more than apartments in Tokyo, New York, and London.
