Built in about 2000 BC, the Clava Cairns are the remains of an ancient burial site, built on a terrace above the River Nairn, near Inverness. This 4000-year-old complex has been a sacred place for millennia and reveals much about the belief systems and customs of the people in the Bronze Age. The sites contain various prehistoric burial monuments as well as the remains of a medieval chapel. Later burials on the site suggest that the Clava Cairns continued this purpose for generations. Two parts of the complex, Balnuaran of Clava and Milton of Clava, are open to the public for viewing.
