The small town of Howick lies in the KwaZulu-Natal Province in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality and is known as ‘the place of many waterfalls’. Run through by numerous tributaries of the uMngeni River which tumble down towards the Indian Ocean, the falls (along with mesmerising natural scenery of forests and dolerite cliffs) lend themselves to an array of adventure sports, including hiking, swimming, horse riding and abseiling. The dams and rivers are abundant with trout, making fly-fishing another popular pastime. There are plenty of cultural and historical highlights too, including the Nelson Mandela arrest site, and a large variety of arts and crafts stalls which celebrate the traditional Zulu heritage.
