The official name for this temple is Wat Phra Chetuphon but the name is seldom used and people still refer to it as the Wat Po temple. The temple is one of the largest temple complexes in the city and is much older than the city itself. The best-known feature of the temple is its huge reclining gold-leaf covered Buddha, but the temple has more to offer than just this. The temple is considered to be the leading school of traditional medicine and massage in Thailand. Massages take place in a communal open-plan pavilion in keeping with the Thai philosophy that massage is not just good for the body but also offers an opportunity to chat and socialise. The temple is open between 8 am and 5 pm and an entry fee is charged.
