Embraced on all sides by lush hills of rice paddies, about 15 minutes drive north of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, the Mae Rim District is a fascinating little town brimming with attractions. History enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the exquisite Wat Pa Dara Phirom Temple, arguably one of the finest in the country, and the 19th-century Dara Pirom Palace Museum, where the fondly-remembered royal princess once lived. Mae Rim is particularly well known for its support and celebration of animals - make sure to visit the Elephant Sanctuary, Tiger Kingdom, and Siam Insect Zoo. Several enthralling outdoor locations beckon, too: the breathtaking Mae Sa Waterfalls with its deep pools; the gorgeous Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, home to pretty walkways and glasshouses of tropical plants; and the jaw-dropping Mon Chaem mountaintop.
